Influencing Policies and Services
Creating Strategies to Improve Services for Albertans with Disabilities
ADF pulls together the collective expertise of its member organizations
to develop service improvement strategies in a broad range of
areas including health, housing, transportation, income supports,
employment, education, recreation/active living, and community
inclusion. ADF working groups develop strategies to help overcome
barriers that people with disabilities face.
Working with Government to Develop and Improve Policies and Programs
that Affect People with Disabilities
ADF works with government to improve services so they better
meet the needs of Albertans with disabilities. ADF makes policy
and service recommendations, provides feedback on government initiatives
and reviews, and participates in government consultations.
Building Partnerships
ADF builds partnerships with government, community organizations
and businesses to provide information about and support the inclusion
of Albertans with disabilities.
Developing Information Packages
ADF creates position papers and information packages on topics
of importance to people with disabilities in Alberta (e.g. AISH,
private healthcare, home care, employment). These information
packages are used by member organizations and people with disabilities
to raise awareness about problems and solutions for addressing
disability issues.
Informing Voters during Elections
During municipal, provincial, and federal elections, ADF distributes
information packages outlining key issues for people with disabilities.
These packages educate the public and candidates about disability
issues and encourage people with disabilities to become involved
in the democratic process.
Helping People with Disabilities Be Heard - Nothing About Us;
Without Us!
ADF members believe strongly that to ensure the best possible
outcomes for people with disabilities, they must be involved in
the development of all policies, supports, and services that affect
their lives. ADF seeks out opportunities and supports Albertans
with disabilities to speak out and become involved in issues of
concern to them.
Promoting International Day of Disabled
Persons
December 3rd marks the International Day of Disabled Persons.
This annual observance aims to promote an understanding of
disability issues and mobilize support for the dignity, rights
and well-being of persons with disabilities. It also seeks to
increase awareness of gains to be derived from the integration
of persons with disabilities in every aspect of political, social,
economic and cultural life. - United Nations
Each year, ADF takes an active role in promoting provincial and
local activities in support of International Day of Disabled Persons.
Providing Education, Networking Opportunities
and Information to our Members
Providing Educational Opportunities
ADF organizes three meetings each year where speakers provide
member organizations with information about the latest initiatives,
technologies, research, and programs and services that impact
the lives of Albertans with disabilities. These meetings also
provide members with the opportunity to meet with one another
to discuss mutually important topics.
Workshops are also conducted in areas that educate and build
the capacity of member organizations.
Providing Disability Related Information and Resources
Through its work, network of resources and the combined knowledge
of its member organizations, ADF provides individuals, not-for-profit
organizations, government, and businesses with disability specific
information and research.
ADF members and friends are provided regular emails about disability
relevant information including: news articles, research, workshops,
current initiatives, upcoming events, government reviews and policy
or program changes, job postings, and other disability-related
information.
