Welcome to the Alberta Disabilities Forum (ADF)
Formed in 1996, ADF is a coalition of 43 not-for-profit provincial
disability organizations whose members
speak with a unified voice on cross-disability issues of concern
for Albertans with disabilities.
Through its work, ADF:

influences policies and services for people with disabilities by creating public strategies, working with and building partnerships with government and other stakeholders, and supporting people with disabilities to have a voice.

educates the public about cross-disability issues by providing information and resources, developing
information packages on disability issues, involvement in political elections and promoting the International Day of Disabled Persons.

provides a broad range of education, information, and networking opportunities to ADF member organizations and others.
WHAT IS NEW?
In September, the Respite Care Demonstration Project was completed. Over eighteen months, ADF developed specialized expertise in respite support. The Project’s goal was to produce evidence-based, made-in-Alberta lessons to guide the future development of provincial respite supports. In the first two phases, ADF reviewed a large body of published research and consulted directly with over 400 family caregivers and service providers across the province. This research produced a strong and nuanced understanding of caregivers’ lived experiences and of the possibilities for program and service support.
In the third phase, ADF developed the Demonstration Project to reflect the findings of its literature review and community consultations. This phase provided temporary respite support to 194 family caregivers. It produced valuable findings, confirmed the effectiveness of respite for Albertan family caregivers, and provided lessons to guide the administration of future supports, including mechanisms to ensure accountability.
Although the Demonstration Project was led by ADF, it represents collaboration between government, numerous disability organizations, and hundreds of individual caregivers across the province. The Project generated expertise and momentum throughout the community, and Alberta’s government has an opportunity to involve community partners to further develop and implement respite supports.
